2. What other things can you upgrade? Have you bought any upgrades recently? Have you ever received a free upgrade?

3. Later in this lesson we’re going to watch a funny video in which a man goes into a shop and buys some upgrades.

Before we watch, let’s look at some of the vocabulary in the video. In this table, each one of the phrases 1-12 has the same meaning as one of the phrases A-L. Can you match up the pairs?

1. At the moment, I can…A. Well, it depends.
2. Don’t misunderstand me.B. That’s exactly what it is.
3. I don’t know much regarding…C. …down the line
4. What you just said describes it perfectly.D. Shall I whack it on, then?

4. Now let’s listen to the video, but still focusing on the phrases A-L.

This will work best if you can do it as a game with your study partner/ teacher.
– Print the document below and cut out the cards.
– Put the cards on a table or chair between you.
– Then press “play” on the video.
– When you hear a phrase that’s on one of the cards, try to grab the card.
– The first person who gets the card can keep it.
– The person with the most cards at the end is the winner!

Do they speak too fast? You could click through to Youtube and set the speed to 0.75 the first time you listen.

5. Now watch the video again and look out for these two things:
– What tactics does the salesperson use to get the customer to upgrade his computer?
– Why is the customer disappointed at the end of the sketch?

6. What do you think is the meaning of the sketch?

7. Let’s look in more detail at phrases that you can use when selling or buying. Download or print the pdf and follow the instructions.

8. Now it’s time for you to do some buying and selling!

To do this, we’re going to use a shopping website called ‘thisiswhyimbroke’ – broke means having less than zero in the bank! But first, some rules:
– Every person in the class should click one of the links. If you’re studying alone, you’ll need to find a friend or a teacher for this!
– When you click the link you will see a product there and a short description.
– You’ve got 7-10 minutes to think of an idea for one or two upgrades to this product. Agree on a time when the class will come back together.
– Next, get together with a partner and take turns to sell your product with the upgrades.
– You have to buy your partner’s product, but you don’t have to buy the upgrades. Only buy the upgrades if they can convince you that you need them. Ask as many questions as you like!
