a. Listen and answer:

  • How did the speakers in the clip find out that something was wrong?
  • How did they verify their suspicions?

b. What is the meaning of the three phrases below?

smell a rat – I played both CDs back to back, and what really made me smell a rat was the tenth étude: the C above middle C was out of tune on both recordings.

without a shadow of a doubt – Without a shadow of a doubt, we were looking at the same piece, by the same person, recorded at the same time on the same piano.

to be on to something / someone – That’s when you knew that you were on to something massive, and that the whole thing was a scam.
