- Christmas-themed lesson
- Practising forming questions to ask for specific information
- Sharing anecdotes about long journeys
Notes: This lesson is inspired by Chris Rea’s song Driving Home for Christmas. For part 2 of the lesson, you’ll need to get hold of a recording of the song. Please make sure that you have a licence to play the song to your class.
- For parts 3 and 5 of this lesson, resources can be downloaded from my TPT store.
1. Discuss
- What Christmas songs in English do you know?
- Do you have a favourite Christmas song?
- What is the mood of most Christmas songs?
It’s one of my favs. Thank you for the idea.

Sorry for a dumb question:
What does “I take a look at the driver next to me. He’s just the same.” in your opinion?

That’s not dumb, it’s a really good question! I take it to mean “he’s just the same as me” – maybe also driving back to see family?

He says “he” but it was his wife who was driving as far as I could gather. But now it’s clear that he meant a person in another car on the same road.

I think so. The lyrics of the song seem to tell a different story from what actually happened that night in 1978. With some classes, it might be interesting to get learners comparing the story with the song lyrics to find the differences in detail.
