DECISION-MAKING (B1-B2 Lesson)

2. Read and answer

According to the philosopher Alain de Botton, “the enemy of good decision making is a lack of sufficient perspectives on a problem”. He says that we should look at the issue from five different angles before making any decision. These are:

  • our worst enemy
  • our gut reaction
  • death
  • caution
  • courage.

a. Find another word with the same meaning as ‘problem’.

b. Find another word which can mean the same as ‘perspectives’.

c. What is the meaning of ‘gut reaction’? How do you say this in your language?

(The text on this page and on page 3 is based on the video How to Make a Decision from the Youtube channel of The School of Life).
